All-terrain tyres for a LandCruiser 79 Series dual cab: options compared
A 79 Series dual-cab tyre shortlist for work, touring and daily use, with four brands to compare and a practical approach to load, size and spare planning.

For a 79 Series dual cab, choose the tyre around the finished vehicle's load and intended use before choosing the most aggressive tread. Our starting shortlist is BFGoodrich KO3, Falken Wildpeak A/T4W, Toyo Open Country A/T III and Maxxis RAZR AT811.
These are four product families to investigate in an approved size. They are not four tyres that fit every 79 wheel, and we have not tested them back-to-back on a dual cab. A supplier needs to confirm the exact tyre specification for your vehicle before it becomes a recommendation to buy.
This guide covers Australian V8 and 2.8-litre 79 double cabs as separate applications. It excludes single cabs, wagons and Troop Carriers.
Our first choice is a properly matched setup
For a work-and-touring 79, we would start by obtaining comparable quotes for the KO3 and Open Country A/T III in the required specification, then bring the Falken and Maxxis alternatives into the same comparison.
That order is an editorial starting point, not a performance podium. A product that cannot meet the wheel, load or size requirements drops out immediately, regardless of its reputation.
For an empty daily driver, we would be reluctant to choose the heaviest specification simply because it looks more purposeful. For a loaded canopy build, we would be equally reluctant to buy from an unladen vehicle recommendation.

Ask the fitter to quote the same intended job across brands. Four prices for different sizes or constructions do not show which tyre is better value.
What the independent evidence changes
The 2026 Tyre Reviews comparison found comfort and noise trade-offs in the KO3. That is a reason to compare your priorities, not call it the universal touring winner. The test was not on a 79.
Give the fitter the finished load plan
Describe the tray, canopy, tools, water, passengers and trailer use. Get the vehicle weighed in the condition you actually intend to travel, then have the tyre and pressure recommendation tied to that load.
A tyre upgrade does not by itself alter the vehicle's legal load limits. If you already have a conversion, bring its documents too. The replacement tyre needs to work within that complete specification.
Include spare tyres in the comparison. Ask which exact size and construction the supplier can support, how you will carry them and whether the chosen wheel fits the intended carrier.
Should you choose 33s or 35s?
Keep tread choice separate from tyre height. A good tread in an unsuitable size is still the wrong purchase.

Choose for the ordinary day as well as the big trip
If most kilometres are on sealed roads, ask for comparable wet-braking and noise evidence. Do not assume a tough-looking sidewall answers either question. If regular remote travel drives the purchase, ask about the proposed construction, load and local replacement support.
We would not promise a mileage figure without terms and relevant evidence. Compare the written warranty, exclusions and fitted cost rather than a claimed lifespan in a review.
