Can you fit 33-inch tyres on a 2026 Toyota HiLux N90?

Yes, a 33-inch-class tyre can be part of a properly modified 2026 Toyota HiLux build. It is not a proven bolt-on fitment for every N90.

The common LT285/70R17 size is the obvious place to look, but Toyota does not list it as a factory tyre. The answer depends on the exact tyre, wheel width, offset, grade, loaded clearance and registration rules.

The N90 is also a new platform. Do not carry an N80 fitment assumption across and call it evidence.

What this guide covers

This guide covers Australian-market diesel double-cab 4x4 HiLux pick-ups from the new generation launched for 2026. It uses N90 as convenient shorthand for that generation.

It covers WorkMate, SR, SR5, SR5+, Rogue and Rugged X at a decision-guide level. It does not cover 4x2, single-cab, extra-cab, cab-chassis or battery-electric variants.

Toyota's May 2026 specification sheet lists 265/65R17 and 265/60R18 factory tyre packages across the diesel 4x4 range. The exact size varies by grade, so start with the placard on your vehicle.

The short answer

Treat 33s as a complete modified-vehicle decision, not a tyre swap.

Maxxis publishes its LT285/70R17 RAZR AT811 at 836 mm overall diameter. Falken publishes its Wildpeak A/T4W in the same nominal size at 838 mm. Their approved wheel-width ranges differ too.

That combination can affect:

  • clearance at full steering lock
  • clearance through suspension compression and droop
  • wheel offset and tyre coverage
  • speedometer accuracy
  • full-size spare packaging
  • load, braking and steering behaviour
  • certification and insurance requirements

A lift may create more static arch space. It does not prove clearance to the body, chassis, steering and suspension through the full operating range.

What does ‘33-inch’ mean on an N90?

It is a useful label, not a complete specification.

Maxxis lists its LT285/70R17 AT811 at 836 mm overall diameter with an approved rim range from 7.5 to 9.5 inches. Falken lists its LT285/70R17 A/T4W at 838 mm with a 7.5 to 9.0-inch range.

The factory tyre notation is not an exact measured diameter either. Toyota lists 265/65R17 on relevant grades, while Maxxis publishes current tyres carrying that size at 777 mm and 782 mm depending on construction.

Within that Maxxis range, moving to LT285/70R17 adds 54 to 59 mm in overall diameter. That variation matters because the common national technical envelope for applicable 4WD goods vehicles is a 50 mm increase above a manufacturer-designated tyre.

This comparison does not decide the legality of your HiLux. It shows why the exact tyre SKU and manufacturer baseline matter more than the 33-inch nickname.

Will 285/70R17 fit without a lift?

There is no responsible universal answer yet.

The new HiLux has not built the long public fitment history of the N80. Different grades, wheel packages and front-end hardware also make a single answer risky. A wheel offset that creates inner clearance can introduce an outer-guard problem, while a more positive offset can do the reverse.

A supplier needs to assess the exact tyre and wheel on the exact HiLux, then check:

  1. Full steering lock in both directions.
  2. Suspension compression and droop at realistic vehicle load.
  3. Clearance to the body, chassis, brakes, steering and suspension.
  4. Tyre coverage in the straight-ahead position.
  5. Wheel and tyre load ratings.
  6. Speedometer accuracy.

Do not treat rubbing as the normal cost of the look. VSB 14 requires the wheel and tyre to avoid contact under operating conditions, including full steering movement on a laden vehicle.

Are 33-inch tyres legal on an N90 HiLux in Australia?

There is no single national yes or no answer.

VSB 14 Section LS sets a technical envelope for non-standard tyres and rims. For applicable 4WD goods vehicles and equivalent 2WD models, it limits tyre diameter to no more than 50 mm above a manufacturer-designated tyre. Clearance, rim compatibility, coverage, load and speedometer requirements still apply.

The Australian Government also states that VSB 14 does not replace state and territory administrative requirements.

Tasmania is the relevant worked example for the build shown above. Its light vehicle inspection manual requires alternative wheels and tyres to comply with VSB 14 Section LS Part 4, along with the applicable load and speed-rating requirements.

The 836 mm Maxxis LT285/70R17 is 54 to 59 mm larger than the manufacturer's own 265/65R17 alternatives cited here. That does not establish the legal baseline for your HiLux, but it does put the combination close enough to the boundary that guessing is a poor decision.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • the manufacturer-designated starting tyre for your exact HiLux
  • the current rules where the vehicle is registered
  • whether the complete lift needs certification or inspection
  • the speedometer, insurer and spare-wheel requirements

Is there an easier alternative?

If you want more sidewall and clearance without committing to the full 33-inch target, compare LT275/70R17.

Maxxis publishes its AT811 in that size at 821 mm overall diameter. That is 15 mm smaller than its LT285/70R17 version and 39 to 44 mm larger than its cited 265/65R17 tyres.

It is still not an automatic fit. It does reduce the diameter and width challenge, which may make the complete wheel, clearance and approval conversation simpler.

  • Choose LT285/70R17 only when the complete build has been checked and approved.
  • Compare LT275/70R17 when simpler clearance and approval matter more than the headline size.
  • Stay close to the placarded size when road use, low complexity and spare-wheel packaging matter most.

Choose the wheel and tyre together

A 17-inch wheel is the logical starting point for the sizes discussed here, but diameter alone proves nothing.

The wheel needs the correct load rating, hub attachment, brake clearance, width and offset for the exact N90 grade. The tyre must sit within its manufacturer's approved rim range. The complete assembly then needs physical and legal verification.

A 2026 HiLux N90 can be built around a 33-inch-class tyre, but there is no defensible universal ‘yes’ for LT285/70R17.

Choose the exact tyre first. Match it to a suitable wheel, verify loaded clearance through full steering and suspension travel then confirm the rules where the vehicle is registered. If the 33-inch target adds more compromise than value, an LT275/70R17 is the sensible comparison.
