New Toyota Hilux accessories in South Africa: what is available now

The ninth-generation Hilux is on South African roads, and the accessory market did not wait around for it. Nudge bars, styling bars, tonneau covers, cattle rails, side steps and under guards are already being sold for the new bakkie, alongside the wheels, tyres, canopies and racks the Hilux has always carried.

This guide is about what is available and what it looks like. It is not a fitment guide, and nothing here proves a part fits your vehicle.

What this guide covers

The Hilux as Toyota South Africa sells it now, in SR, SRX, Raider and Legend grades, with the 2.8 GD-6 engine and a six-speed automatic across the range. The mild-hybrid version is a Legend item, listed from R945 500 in rear-wheel drive and R999 900 in 4x4.

It covers accessory categories rather than individual product recommendations, because the honest position on a new generation is that availability is moving weekly and fitment is derivative-specific.

A bakkie with a long memory

The Hilux did not become the default South African bakkie through advertising. It got there by being the thing on the farm, on the site and on the pass, year after year, and South African-specification models are still built at Toyota's Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.

That matters for a practical reason as much as a sentimental one. A vehicle that has been here that long has an accessory industry built around it: canopy shops, rail fabricators, wheel distributors and fitment centres in every dorp with a main road. Very few vehicles anywhere get that.

What is already on the shelf

MAXE lists nudge bars, styling bars, tonneau covers, cattle rails, side steps and under guards for the new-generation Hilux, covering the Raider, Legend and Commercial models. That is the manufacturer's own statement of its range rather than independent proof of fitment, but it tells you the local industry has already retooled.

Toyota South Africa also publishes its own genuine accessory catalogue for the Hilux Double Cab, priced in rand with part numbers against each item. Read it carefully. The catalogue is browsed per derivative, so a snorkel, side step or alloy wheel listed against one Hilux is not evidence that the same part suits another. Select your exact derivative before you believe a price.

Wheels and tyres

This is where most builds start, and it is the change that alters how a bakkie looks more than anything else you can bolt on.

The wheel brands are here. ROH, to take one example, is distributed in South Africa through local off-road wholesalers, and the tyre brands South Africans already know are the same ones the touring market runs elsewhere.

What we will not do is publish a factory wheel and tyre size for each new grade. We could not find one in a Toyota South Africa specification document, only in press coverage, and a tyre-size claim is exactly the sort of thing that should not be repeated second-hand. Your placard and your own specification sheet are the starting point, and the size you move to is a conversation with a fitment centre, not a blog.

The back of the bakkie

Canopies, load bodies, rails and racks are where South African build culture is most itself.

Skaaptralies are the clearest example. Cattle rails, stockman rails and skaaptralies all describe the same thing: the tubular frame over the load bin, originally there to stop sheep and cattle getting out. Plenty of them now carry nothing heavier than a canvas cover and a reputation, which is a perfectly honest reason to fit them.

A canopy changes the vehicle more completely than almost any other single item, turning an open bin into secure storage, a workshop or the base of a touring setup. A roof rack changes the silhouette and gives you somewhere to put the things that should never live in the cab.

What to check before you buy

• Your exact derivative and body style, not just 'Hilux'. The accessory catalogues are built around derivatives and they differ.
• Whether the part is released for the ninth generation or for the previous one. Both are on sale and on the road right now.
• The tyre placard on your own vehicle before any wheel or tyre conversation.
• Load, towing and roadworthy implications with a qualified fitment centre. Appearance is our job. Fitment is theirs.

See it on your own bakkie first

The awkward part of buying any of this is that you are choosing from a product photo on a white background and hoping. Wheels in particular look completely different on a sand-coloured double cab than they do on a black one, and a canopy or a set of rails changes the whole shape of the vehicle from behind.
