RSI SmartCap EVO S vs EVO A vs EVO D: which canopy suits you?

The main difference between the RSI SmartCap EVO S, EVO A and EVO D is the door and window layout. Choose the EVO S for sliding side windows, the EVO A for solid side doors with internal storage panels or the EVO D for steel doors all round.

Start with what lives in your ute tub. Camping gear, everyday luggage and work tools create different priorities. The most expensive SmartCap is not automatically the right one.

EVO S: choose it when you want side windows

The EVO Sport combines gullwing side access with flush-mounted sliding windows. You can open a window for airflow without lifting the entire side door.

It is the logical starting point for an everyday ute when seeing into the tub and opening the side windows matter more than using those doors for equipment storage. Ask yourself whether you will actually use that glass. A permanent internal fit-out can make side visibility less useful.

The trade-off is straightforward: windows give you visibility, but they also allow a view into the load area. If concealing tools is the priority, look at the solid-door models.

EVO A: choose it for an organised touring setup

The EVO Adventure has double-walled steel gullwing side doors with internal MOLLE panels. These are mounting panels for compatible gear, useful when planning what needs to stay within reach at camp.

Unlike the Defender, Adventure retains a rear window. SmartCap's manufacturer specification describes a fixed window in the rear half-door. That source describes the model architecture; confirm the exact Australian configuration when ordering.

Our pick for a touring build would be the EVO A if the side doors form part of your storage plan. Sketch the layout first: which side serves the kitchen, where do frequently used items sit and what will obstruct access? A solid side panel makes more sense when you have a use for the space behind it.

You give up the Sport's sliding side windows. If those are central to how you use the tub, the Sport remains the better match.

EVO D: choose it to keep tools and cargo out of sight

The EVO Defender uses steel doors all round and includes integrated MOLLE panels. RSI positions it around cargo protection, with no glass in those doors.

It is the strongest match here for a work ute carrying equipment you want concealed. That is a layout recommendation, not a tested theft-resistance rating: locks, installation and the vehicle tailgate still matter.

The compromise is visibility through the canopy. Think through reversing and rear observation before choosing a solid rear door. For an owner who regularly carries bulky work gear and never needs to see through the tub, that may be an acceptable trade.

What stays the same across the range?

RSI's Australian mid-size listings specify 409 automotive-grade stainless steel construction, a five-piece modular design and a three-year warranty for all three. They also list the same canopy weight of 75 kg and roof capacities of 150 kg dynamic and 350 kg static. Confirm the actual weight of your supplied model and fitted accessories.

That makes roof capacity a poor reason to pay more for the Sport or Adventure. The purchase decision is primarily about windows, storage access and how you want to use the load area.

Can an RSI SmartCap carry a rooftop tent?

RSI describes integrated roof rails for mounting accessories including rooftop tents. The critical distinction is 150 kg while moving versus 350 kg while parked, as stated on its Australian model pages.

Do not treat the parked figure as a driving allowance. Ask the installer to check the complete combination: canopy, tub, mounting kit, rack and tent. Include rack and tent weight in the travelling load calculation and occupants in the parked assessment. SmartCap's manufacturer guidance warns that canopy capacity can exceed the vehicle tub's capacity.

A published canopy rating alone does not approve a particular rooftop tent installation or establish an off-road allowance.

What to check before ordering

• Exact vehicle: provide the year, generation, cab style, tub configuration and variant. A search for 'RSI SmartCap Hilux' or 'RSI SmartCap Ranger' is a starting point, not a part number.
• Existing equipment: ask how the canopy works with your tub liner, sports bar, roller shutter and any fitted rack.
• Installed weight: request the total for the canopy, internal storage and roof accessories, then check it against the vehicle's available payload.
• Everyday access: decide what needs to be reached from either side and whether an internal fit-out will block a window.
• Final cost: compare fitted quotes with the same accessories and inclusions.
